History of Banksia Grove

Discover the story behind Banksia Grove, from the estate’s unique name to the rich history of the Wanneroo region.

Where did the name “Banksia Grove” come from?

Did you know that Banksia Grove was formerly named Cockman after the early settler family of James and Mary Ann?

The Cockman family were early settlers of the Swan River Colony, arriving in 1829. James arrived aboard the Callista as an indentured servant of George Leake and Mary Ann arrived aboard the Atwick, also as an indentured servant. Their marriage in 1830 was the first Anglican marriage in the colony.

James and Mary Ann settled in the Wanneroo Area back in 1860 (where their historic home still remains). The suburb was then renamed Banksia Grove in 1998, after the abundance of banksia flowers that are native to the area.

Wanneroo: A story carved from stone

Well known for the mining of Limestone, the Wanneroo region is also famous for its production of Lime which began in about 1910.

After World War II, the lime kilns reopened and during the 1950s and 1960s, the Wanneroo area supplied most of the State’s needs, exporting lime as far afield as Darwin.

Nowadays, there are only a few that are still operating.
